Battery Solar Sizing Independence

How to correctly size an off-grid battery bank

22.05.2026 | Smart Energy Architect

Going completely off-grid is the ultimate statement of energy independence. However, the transition from relying on the grid to managing your own power station hinges on one critical component: the battery bank. Size it too small, and you're left in the dark during a storm; size it too large, and you waste thousands of euros on capacity you will never use.

1. The Baseline: Auditing Your Daily Watt-Hours

Before you look at battery brands, you need to calculate your true daily energy consumption. Unlike grid-tied homes where energy use is passive, off-grid living requires strict awareness. You must list every appliance, its power rating in watts, and the exact hours it runs daily. Multiplying watts by hours gives you the Wh (Watt-hours). Summing these up gives your total daily baseline.

2. Account for Depth of Discharge (DoD)

A battery's nominal capacity is not its usable capacity. If you buy a 10 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, you should realistically only drain it down to 80% to protect its lifespan (giving you 8 kWh of usable juice). If you are using older Lead-Acid tech, that safe limit drops down to 50%. When designing the architecture of an off-grid system, always divide your daily required Wh by the safe DoD percentage.

3. Designing for Days of Autonomy

What happens when the sun doesn't shine for three days straight? "Days of Autonomy" is the number of days your system can run entirely off the batteries without any solar input. For a safe, reliable off-grid setup, we usually architect for 2 to 3 days of autonomy. This multiplies your required capacity, but ensures your refrigerator and water pumps keep running through winter storms.

Conclusion

An off-grid system is only as strong as its weakest link. Properly sizing your battery bank guarantees that your system operates safely, efficiently, and pays for itself within its operational lifespan. Measure twice, invest once, and enjoy true energy freedom.
